Unprepared

This past weekend was a living, breathing example of how unprepared I am for most things that happen in life - in both the metaphysical sense as well as a philosophical one.  In the span of 24 hours, I found myself unprepared for multiple circumstances including:
  1. an entire family meltdown after a long and trying week
  2. the drive-by hugging that ended with me in a pile of tears praying I could just stop crying
  3. the joy of ministering to and with other women who are struggling with just as many real issues as I am
  4. a boy scout event- where you are ALWAYS supposed to be prepared
Each one of these situations either offered me a chance to experience the true and perfect grace and love of God or presented me with the opportunity to show and extend the love and grace of God to others!

Those of you who know me, know that I am competitive, and at the boy scout outing - where I thought we were just going to have dinner and hang out - a challenge was delivered, and I could NOT let that pass me by despite my attire.  But what I didn't know until after I watched the video was just how very profound this situation was and how it perfectly encapsulated the story of the last 6 months of my life.

I am going to show you what happens when you walk through this life with the God of the Universe on your side.  Just watch my very own flip flop infested challenge of the weekend.

Now that you have seen the physical challenge, here is what I learned:

I arrived into 2014 ready for God to do some very specific - BIG things - in my life.  But I entered this season somewhat unprepared for the event.  I showed up to the challenge in flip flops rather than combat boots.  I started walking on the tightrope of life when - WHAM - I found myself hanging by a thread, pulling and swaying and fighting to find my footing on March 30thUnprepared and uncertain if I could regain my upright position, I struggled, wrested and even clawed my way back to a standing position.  I celebrated the recovery, and then moved on to the rest of the challenges that would - and still do - lay ahead.

You see, God is never unprepared.  He is always aware of what is happening and if you notice in the video, no matter how many times I faltered and stumbled, I never ended up in the river, the mud or the rocks.  I was completely safe and secure.  And what you don't "see" in the video are the hands of my savior holding me as I stumbled, wrested and fought with my circumstances.  He never left my side.  He never let go of the rope and He never let go of me.  You see, although I may be unprepared, He is the designer and orchestrator of my life.  He knows my every move and He is always prepared to catch me in my utterly unprepared state.

The other thing I noticed is that as I recovered from my precarious position, everyone around me started cheering me on.  You see, your life is not just about you and what you are going through, it is about showing the glory of God to those onlookers who are watching you struggle and rooting for you to succeed.  Because if you can do it, maybe they can too.  Our lives are not about what we do or do not do in our own strength, but rather about what He is doing with the story of our lives if we will let Him use us for His purposes.

Others were inspired by the accomplishment, and the fact that I made it gave them hope that they too could face their challenges.  If my family can face the challenge of a stroke and still be filled with the grace and love of God, and we point others back to the source of our strength, then we are doing all that we can do and we will be unprepared for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support from those around us and the blessings of God as He showers us with His love.  Now that is an unprepared state I can handle and look forward to experiencing.
